Former legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar has come with a sort of harsh criticism for India’s head coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma. The former skipper has questioned the approach of management during the selection of the playing XI in the entire part of the ongoing edition of the 20-20 World Cup.
Notably, The Rohit-Rahul has already been under fire for picking up Dinesh Karthik over the young wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. Meanwhile, Gavaskar iterated about ignoring Yuzvendra Chahal who was picked in the squad as a first spinner but couldn’t get a chance to feature in either of the matches of the eighth edition of the marquee tournament.
On the other hand, senior Ravichandran Ashwin who was not even in the plans of the management has appeared in all the matches of the tournament the Indian team played so far.
The former Indian veteran of 10,000+ runs is not happy with the selection of Ashwin as the number-8 batter in the final XI.
If you have to depend on a no.8, what does it tell you about your top 7 batsmen? - Sunil Gavaskar
“I do not understand the logic behind putting faith in Ashwin at no.8 batter. If you have to depend on a no.8, what does it tell you about your top 7 batsmen? Is the management not confident enough in their top 7? I feel you need to back your batters to bat for 20 overs. Had it been ODIs, I would have understood this decision,” said Gavaskar while assessing the managerial approach of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma.
Later on, the 73-year-old also backed Haryana-born leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and went on to say that he wants to see him play every match.
“I want Chahal to play every match. To throw him in the deep end is not fair,” he added later.
India will now lock horns with Jos Buttler’s England in the second semi-final of the 2022 edition of the World Cup 2022. Whereas their arch-rivals Pakistan will face Kane Williamson-led New Zealand.
