England finished day three of the ongoing 5th Ashes Test at the Oval, scoring 389 runs for nine wickets in 80 overs. They managed a huge lead of 377 runs also. Stuart Broad and James Anderson were the overnight batters. But, after the day of play, Broad shocked everyone by announcing that he would take retirement from professional cricket after this ongoing match.
Now, ahead of the fourth day, the star Australia batter, Steve Smith was seen appreciating Broad and having a pat on Broad’s shoulder on his successful career. However, England added only six runs as Anderson got out for eight runs. Broad remained not out on eight runs and they set up a target of 384 runs for the Aussies.

Stuart Broad has played 167 Tests for England
However, after day three, Broad attended the press conference and opened up on his decision to take retirement. While speaking to the reporters, he said: “I feel great, to be honest. I've probably been thinking for a couple of weeks and even up until last night, I was still just sat in my room, umming and ahhing, speaking to Mollie
“At half-eight, I just texted Stokesy saying: 'Can I come and see you?'. I walked in, shook his hand and said: 'That's me, thanks for everything you've done for me'. I feel really great, and I feel even better that we've had a brilliant day today. I was a bit nervous this morning thinking that if we lose early wickets, I could feel a bit devastated,” he further added.
“But to see the guys play the way they did, entertain the way they did - and I thought the atmosphere here today was awesome - it felt so good. And we've put ourselves in a position that I wished we could be in to try and chase ten wickets for an Ashes win. Well, an Ashes Test match win,” Broad said.
