In the ongoing tournament, Willey has notably bolstered his reputation during his recent four-week stint in India. He has secured five wickets at an average of 27.20 and has scored 42 runs from the lower order in three matches. It's worth noting that he joined the team following England's significant loss to South Africa in Mumbai.

However, the shocking decision came a week after the announcement of the England and Wales Cricket Board's Central contract. He is the only player from the 15-member World Cup squad who was not part of the 26 centrally contracted players. This decision affected Willey as he decided to refrain from international cricket. It came as a shock to fans who were expecting him at the upcoming T20I World Cup.

Announcing his retirement plans, David Willey said that he never thought that this day would come. He said, "From a young boy, I've only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England. So, with careful thought and consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of the World Cup."

"I have worn the shirt with immense pride and given my absolute everything to the badge on my chest. I've been very lucky to be a part of such an incredible white-ball team with some of the best players in the world. I've made some special memories and great friends along the way and been through some very difficult times. To my wife, two children, mom, and dad, I wouldn't have been able to follow my dreams without your sacrifice and unwavering support throughout. Thank you for sharing the special memories and picking up the pieces when I've fallen apart; I'm eternally grateful", he concludes.

Willey further stated that he will give his everything in the remaining three league games for England and will try to win those games.
