The 51st match of the Indian T20 league 2022 saw Mumbai beat Gujarat by five runs. This is Mumbai's second win in 10 games. As for Gujarat, they have now lost two consecutive matches. Although this game turned out to be a thriller, the Gujarat-based franchise dominated the game for most of the part, but still ended up on the losing side.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Gujarat's bowlers weren't really able to pick any early wickets. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan finally came to the party and hit some eye-catching shots. They scored 63 runs in the first six overs. Just when the Mumbai skipper looked set to get to a big score, he was dismissed in the eighth over.
Sharma scored a 28-ball 43. Suryakumar Yadav had a rare failure as he had to prematurely return to the pavilion after scoring 13 off 11. As for Kishan, he had to depart in the 12th over. The keeper batter scored 45 runs in 29 balls. Thus, Mumbai had a mini-collapse. Kieron Pollard's bad form continues as he was dismissed for four, and took 14 balls to score the same.
However, Tim David showed why dropping him after two games was a bad idea as he played a sensational knock. The aggressive batter scored a quickfire 44 from just 21 balls. This propelled the five-time champions to 177-6 in the first innings. Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers as he only gave 24 runs in his four overs, and picked two wickets as well.
As for the second innings, Gujarat's openers got their side to an explosive start. Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill played some elegant shots as they added 54 runs in the powerplay overs. After putting together a 106-run partnership, Gill departed after scoring a 36-ball 52. Saha was quick to follow as he perished five balls later.
Post which, things got tight towards the end. David Miller and Rahul Tewatia had to once again finish the game. However, the law of averages caught them and thus, they failed to chase the total. Gujarat fell short of their target by five runs. Daniel Sams bowled a sensational last over as he defended nine runs, and pulled off a miracle for the Mumbai-based franchise. Several fans took to Twitter to speak about the game.
