The action returned in the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday, with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) hosting Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for the Southern Derby. While the momentum in the RCB squad is upbeat after a dominant home victory over Delhi Capitals in their last game, CSK are coming into the game against the backdrop of a painful defeat in their previous match against Rajasthan Royals at the Chepauk.
Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to bowl first. Chennai Super Kings lost their opener Ruturaj Gaikwad cheaply for three off six balls. However, they recovered, with Devon Conway (83 off 45) and Ajinkya Rahane (37 off 20) taking the score to 90/2. Shivam Dube seemed in fine form in his knock of 52 off 27. And, final flourishes by Ambati Rayudu (14 off 6) and Moeen Ali (19 off 9) took the team total to 226/6 in twenty overs.
Devon Conway, with 83 off 45, remained the top-scorer in the match
For RCB, all six bowlers used β Mohammed Siraj, Wayne Parnell, Vyshak Vijay Kumar, Glenn Maxwell, Wanindu Hasaranga and Harshal Patel returned with one scalp apiece from the game.
The home team started off the chase shakily, with opener Virat Kohli dismissed for six runs by Akash Singh. Top order batter Mahipal Lomror followed the former skipper with a five-ball duck as RCB were two wickets down within two overs. However, skipper Faf du Plessis (62 off 33) and Glenn Maxwell (76 off 36) got them back on track. Dinesh Karthik (28 off 14) and Suyash Prabhudessai (19 off 10) tried their best to push for a win but, ultimately, fell short by 8 runs. For CSK, Tushar Deshpande remained the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/45 in four overs.
Next, in the sixteenth edition of the IPL, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who seem to have rediscovered their form, will be hosting the Mumbai Indians, who have also bounced back with two consecutive wins following a signature underwhelming start to their season. The equation for the team from Deccan is the same: two successive wins following two defeats in their four games of the season.
