The stage was set at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk on 6 May 2023 when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with Mumbai Indians (MI) in the ongoing IPL. MI came to the clash with two back-to-back wins while CSK were winless in their last three matches. So, MS Dhoni and his men were looking for a win in front of the home ground.

Speaking of the match, MS Dhoni won the toss and asked MI to bat first. At the toss, Dhoni said: "We'll bowl first. A bit of rain expected, that's one reason, looks like a good wicket and we want them to set a target for us. Every individual has worked well, everyone can show some attention on the field, we've improved every game, there have been some slip ups, but we need to finish well. We're playing with the same squad."

While, Rohit said: “Going pretty well, had a couple of good games, just about continuing the momentum. We have some worries, but we've started to do well. It's been challenging to find the right players and the right combinations. We know our strengths and the players who can fit in. Two changes for is - Kumar Kartikeya is OUT, a debut for Raghav Goyal. Tilak Varma is ill, he's replaced by Tristan Stubbs.”

Before this match, Rohit Sharma has been having a poor tournament as he scored 184 runs in nine matches, at an average of 20.44. So, fans were hoping for a good knock from the MI skipper in this match. But, he did not come out as opener along with Ishan Kishan. Instead of him, Cameron Green came out. Seeing that, the former Kiwi pacer, Simon Doull heaped high praises and claimed Rohit as a ‘selfless’ cricketer. He said: "very selfless from Rohit Sharma to change his opening position. Not many winning sides change their order". However, the move did not work in favour of Rohit and MI as he managed a three-ball duck only against CSK. So, fans came up and slammed Doull over his comment.
