Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi has announced the launch of Mega Star League (MSL) for former cricketers. In this league, former players from Pakistan and other nations will participate. Afridi, who was an integral part of Pakistan Super League till last year, retired from all forms of cricket recently. The 42-year-old played 27 Tests, 398 ODIs, and 99 T20Is in his career from 1996 to 2018. He is considered as one of the veterans of the game.
The right-hander was known as a game changer in the limited-overs format due to his six-hitting ability. In ODIs, he smashed 352 sixes to his name while in T20Is, he stroked 73 hits over the ropes. Meanwhile, during an interaction with the media, the 2009 20-20 World Cup winner revealed that the league will be played in September this year.
He added that the idea behind the league is to support the former cricketers, athletes and sports journalists financially. The all-rounder further revealed that the likes of former leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed, former skippers Inzamam-Ul-Haq and Waqar Younis will play in the league alongside him. Afridi also revealed that six teams will play in the league.
“Mega Star League is an entertaining league, which is scheduled to be played in September in Rawalpindi this year. The core idea behind introducing this league is to financially support the ex-cricketers, athletes, and sports journalists,” Afridi told in the press conference as quoted by Cricket Pakistan.
“The MSL will feature six teams, and foreign players will also take part in the upcoming league. PSL is for youngsters and I am not young enough anymore. I, Mushtaq Ahmed, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis will play in MSL,” he added.
This is not the first league that will feature former cricketers. In January this year, Legends League Cricket was played in Oman where former players from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and other parts of the world played in a nine-day tournament, which was won by World Giants.
