Chandrakant Pandit was named the head coach of the two-time Indian T20 League champions Kolkata on August 17. The head coach's role was up for grabs after it was vacated by Brendon McCullum post-IPL 2022. It was due to the fact that McCullum was appointed as England’s head coach in Test cricket and thus decided to part ways with the Kolkata franchise.
Pandit was instrumental in guiding Madhya Pradesh to its maiden Ranji Trophy win this season. Before this memorable stint with Madhya Pradesh, Pandit has been the head coach of six Ranji-winning teams. Meanwhile, Kolkata CEO Venky Mysore and former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan indulged in friendly banter related to Pandit.
Interestingly, when the former Indian wicketkeeper guided Madhya Pradesh to the Ranji title, Irfan tweeted on June 26 congratulating him and also stating the possibility of Pandit taking over an Indian T20 League team.“How about a good IPL contract for him?” were the words of Irfan Pathan on his Twitter post. In response to Irfan's old tweet, Mysore tweeted on Wednesday (August 17) “We were listening to you Irfan Bhai.”

Pathan came up with a witty reply in response to Mysore's tweet. He tweeted, “Haha Venky bhai. Wishing you and Chandu Bhai all the luck. I’m sending you my bank details ;)”

Under the McCullum-Shreyas regime last year, Kolkata had a below-par Indian T20 League 2022 season and failed to qualify for the playoffs. They finished seventh in the league stage with just 6 wins out of 14 games. The men in purple failed to replicate the magic of the year 2012 and 2014 when they clinched the IPL title. Chandrakant Pandit will be looking to steer Kolkata to their third Indian T20 League title and end their eight-year-long trophy drought in IPL 2023.
We are very excited that Chandu is joining the Kolkata family - Venky Mysore on Chandrakant Pandit
Making the announcement, Venky Mysore, CEO of Kolkata said:
“We are very excited that Chandu is joining the Kolkata family. He will lead us through the next phase of our journey. His deep commitment to what he does and his track record of success in domestic cricket is there for everyone to see. We are looking forward to his partnership with our skipper Shreyas Iyer, which promises to be an exciting one."
Accepting the new challenge, Chandrakant Pandit responded:
“It’s a great honour and privilege to be given this responsibility. I have heard from players and others who have been associated with the Knight Riders. About the family culture, as well as the tradition of success that has been created. I am excited about the quality of the support staff and the players. Also excited to meet all who are a part of the setup and I am looking forward to this opportunity with all humility and positive expectations.”
