The first Test of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy is going to take place in Nagpur on 9 February 2023. All fans are eagerly waiting for this series while teams are busy in full preparation. After a four-day camp in Bengaluru, Steve Smith and other players reached Nagpur for the series opener.
The pitch of Nagpur is in the headlines for the last few days. All Australian players are expecting a rank-turner in the first match of the series. Therefore, they practiced in a customized pitch during the four-day camp at the KSCA Stadium on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The Aussies have avoided any tour or practice games this time around.
"If we can win a series in India, that will be bigger than the Ashes series." - Steve Smith
However, Steve Smith came up in support of that and said that it is better off having their own nets and getting spinners in and bowl as much as they can. While speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Smith said: "The last time we went I'm pretty sure we got served up a green top (to practice on) and it was sort of irrelevant. We're better off having our own nets and getting spinners in and bowling as much as they can. We'll wait and see when we hit the ground. I think we've made the right decision to not play a tour match." During the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2016/17 in India, tracks were rank turners and those were in headlines, even after the completion of the series.
Now, on 7 February 2023, Cricket Australia shared some pictures where Steve Smith, David Warner, and others were seen monitoring the Nagpur pitch closely. The images went viral instantly and fans came up with some hilarious tweets on social media platforms. Cricket Australia shared the tweet with a caption: “An early look at the Nagpur pitch #INDvAUS”. However, Steve Smith had a great last Test series in India. He scored 499 runs in eight innings, at an average of 71.28, including three centuries.
