Australia are in a strong position in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final at The Oval as they are moving forward to set a monumental target for the Indian batters. Australia scored 469 runs in the first innings and wrapped the Indian team on the score of 296 runs. They finished the 3rd day at 123 for 4 and with a lead of 296 runs.

Meanwhile, the management of the Indian squad has come under harsh fire from former Australian legendary captain Steve Waugh for leaving the number one Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin out of the starting lineup for the WTC 2023 final. There were several rumours regarding Ashwin's selection for the starting lineup of the vital summit game in London but the off-spinner was not given a spot in India's starting XI.

''I do think (India) have picked the wrong side. Spin will play a big part in this Test match and it is going to be up and down. I would have picked Ashwin for his batting, let alone his bowling. That is why I can't believe he isn't playing because he has got five Test centuries as well. It is very strange," Waugh was quoted as saying by India Today.

Waugh further added and said that Australia also made the same blunder 4 years ago during the Ashes as the pitch at the Oval looks green but it’s actually dry underneath. At first, it looks like the condition is overcast but that’s not actually true according to him.

"We made the same blunder four years ago in the Ashes. The Oval is always tricky. It looks green on top but underneath it is crumbly and a bit dry. You can get lulled into the overcast sky and green pitch and think it is going to do everything. As soon as the sun comes out it is totally different and dries out quickly.” Waugh added.
