Pakistan are currently busy playing the ongoing five-match T20I series at home against New Zealand. The Men in Green are leading the series 2-1 after three matches. The fourth game will take place on 20 April 2023. However, recently, Babar Azam faced a lot of criticism over his captaincy.
Many fans and former cricketers suggested that Babar Azam should leave the captaincy of Pakistan. Now, the former Pakistan cricketer, Shoaib Malik came up with an epic suggestion for the Pakistan skipper. While speaking on the Geo News programme "Score", Malik also claimed that Babar should leave the captaincy for the team’s benefit.
“Babar Azam should resign from captaincy which will benefit Pakistan Cricket Team as well.” - Shoaib Malik
Shoaib Malik said: "Babar Azam is a great batter but we do injustice by putting his leadership qualities and batting ability on the same scale. This will help Babar Azam make more records on an international level as the pressure on him will be limited to his batting. He should resign from captaincy which will benefit Pakistan Cricket Team as well. He still needs a lot of time to improve as a captain but our culture doesn't gives time to players. The release of pressure will let Babar break many records in cricket".
It seemed that the former cricketer claimed that in Pakistan, people want instant results. Babar Azam needs still a lot of time to get improved as a skipper. But, he can remove that extra pressure by leaving captaincy. Currently, the Pakistan skipper is one of the top batters across all formats in the world. So, that will help him to break many records, and thus, his batting performance can win many matches for Pakistan.
However, before this series, Babar Azam and some senior players took a rest from the T20I series against Afghanistan. In that series, Shadab Khan led the side. So, fans were anticipating that a leadership change might be one the cards. But, the PCB Chairman, Najam Sethi dismissed such rumours and claimed that Babar will continue as a leader. He even urged people to support him.
Here is how fans have reacted to the statement shared by Shoaib Malik:
