After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Hyderabad's bowlers were superb as they didn't give any breathing space to the Kolkata openers. While making his debut for his ninth franchise, Aaron Finch was dismissed for just seven. Venkatesh Iyer's poor run in the 2022 edition continued as he had to depart for just six, and consumed 13 balls for the same.

The two-time champions were 70-4 in 10 overs and were seemingly in a lot of trouble. However, Nitish Rana finally came good for his side with a superb half-century. Post his dismissal, Andre Russell took the responsibility of getting his team to a good total. The dynamic all-rounder scored an unbeaten 49 off just 25 deliveries.

This included four fours and four sixes. This enabled Kolkata to get to 175-8 in their stipulated 20 overs. T Natrajan was the pick of the bowlers as despite being hit for 37 runs, he picked three crucial wickets. In the second innings, Hyderabad's openers were dismissed rather cheaply. The game was at balance after the first six overs as Hyderabad were 46-2.

However, what followed was absolute mayhem. Rahul Tripathi showed no mercy on his former team, and was hitting the big shots for fun. He put on an explosive partnership with Aiden Markram. Tripathi played a wonderful innings and went on to score 71 from just 37 balls. His knock came at a whopping strike rate of 191.89. He and the Proteas batter added 95 runs in just 54 balls.

Kolkata's mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy turned out to have a bad day as he went for 45 runs in just three overs. Despite getting Tripathi's wicket, the damage was already done. At the end, Hyderabad went on to chase the target with 13 balls to spare. Aiden Markram fittingly finished the game with six. It is to be noted that he scored an unbeaten 68. Several fans took to Twitter to speak about the game.
