Australia crushed South Africa in the first Test and the two teams are facing off in the second Test that kicked off on Boxing day, December 26, Monday. The Proteas were bowled out for a mere total of 189 and it was the young allrounder Cameron Green who stood for the team with his five-for. As far as the Australian first innings is concerned, trailing a meagre score, the opener David Warner roared back to form with his fiery century.
While Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne made their way back to the dressing room after contributing 1 run and 14 runs respectively, Steve Smith joined hands with the southpaw in the middle to put on a terrific partnership, eventually lifting the team from the initial hiccup, helping the Baggy Greens take a massive lead.
Much to the delight of the Australian fans, the fiery left-handed batter brought up his 25th Test century in his 100th Test match, a record that will stay in everyone’s hearts forever. Reaching the three-figure landmark off just 144 balls, Warner ensured that his old roaring celebration was witnessed after quite a long time.
Steve Smith, David Warner stand up for Australia, yet again
To add more, while Warner was pounding with energy at the other end, Smith ensured that he stayed steady at his end, to ensure that the Baggy Greens refrained from leaking any wickets. Much to the surprise of the fans, the veteran reached the 50-run landmark and played a handy knock at the other end.
At the third session on Day 2, the Australian opener was inching towards the 200-run landmark, while the right-hander kept thriving at the other end to bag his 30th Test century. The Baggy Greens were reeling at 298/2 with the southpaw unbeaten at 177 and Smith at 84, with fans awaiting the epic scenes of both batters reaching the feat. Eventually, the left-handed opener reached the 200-run mark, silencing all of his critics and haters and sending a message to the world, that he is finished yet.
South Africa, on the other hand, were clueless and struggled to come up with the right balls against the well-set batters, with Kagiso Rabada being the only bowler to have picked up a wicket on the day. As things stand, let us take a look at a few Twitter reactions to David Warner’s century:
