In a surprising turn of events, a sportsperson has been arrested for falsifying his age in the city of Pune. Amol Kolpe, a cricketer from Malegaon, was apprehended by the Baramati City police on Saturday in connection with an age-fudging case. Following the completion of his three-day police custody remand, he was sent to a 14-day magisterial custody by a Baramati court on Tuesday. Kolpe now has the option to apply for regular bail after his arrest. This case stems from the qualifying round of the Maharashtra Cricket Association's Under-19 invitation league matches that took place in January this year. Kolpe had initially submitted documents stating his date of birth as September 28, 2007. However, subsequent inquiries revealed the existence of older documents mentioning a different date.
The arrest of Kolpe and the booking of three others on charges of cheating and forgery were prompted by a complaint filed by Nana Satav, a representative of the Karbhari Club, which belongs to the same group as Kolpe's club. Satav alleged that Kolpe had submitted fake documents to manipulate his age. The three individuals named in the FIR have sought anticipatory bail relief from the Baramati sessions court. The bail plea of all four individuals is expected to be heard on Thursday.
Inspector Sunil Mahadik of the Baramati City police stated, "We thoroughly verified the documents submitted by the complainant. After verification, we interrogated the young cricketer from Malegaon regarding his concealment of his real age and subsequently arrested him." Mahadik added, "After a magistrate court ordered his three-day custodial remand, which concluded on Tuesday, he has been sent to magisterial custody, giving him the opportunity to seek regular bail." Mahadik further mentioned that they would gather all the relevant documents pertaining to Kolpe's true date of birth and compare them with the documents he submitted for the tournament in Baramati earlier this year. They would also investigate the involvement of other individuals in the case.
Kolpe's elder brother, Kiran, expressed ignorance about the level of matches or the age group in which Amol would be competing when he went to Baramati to participate in the cricket tournament earlier this year.
Complainant Nana Satav, a former GST commissioner, cited the incompetent handling of the case by the tournament authorities as the reason behind his decision to approach the police. He emphasized that the improper addressing of the issue of overage is tantamount to playing with the futures of young players who adhere to the regulations. This was Amol Kolpe's first year participating in any age group of the MCA invitation league.
