The 2023 World Cup will be held in India which will commence from October 5. The last time the World Cup was held in India was in 2011. That year India scripted history and lifted the cup under the able leadership of MS Dhoni. Now under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, it remains to be seen whether India can create history yet again in home conditions.
The 15-member squad ahead of the World Cup could look something like this. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have sealed their spots, no questions asked. Shubman Gill will be Rohit's opening partner. Kohli will take the number three spot. The middle order though still not confirmed could have these names.
With KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer yet to attain full fitness, Sanju Samson could take the number four slot. Hardik Pandya will play the role of number 5. Pandya the all-rounder will also shore up India's bowling stocks and bowl a few overs. Since Suryakumar Yadav was tried at number 6 in the West Indies. The Indian management might stick with that possibility.
Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj will be India's frontline pacers
Suryakumar's attacking skill of play would be more utilised at number 6 in ODIs. Shardul Thakur will be taking the slot of a seamer and also he can shore up the batting at number 7. The pace bowlers' slots will be occupied by Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj. When it comes to the spinners, the wrist-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.
Ravindra Jadeja will play down the order and also chip in with vital breakthroughs with his left-arm spin. Mukesh Kumar has been pulling all the right stops and he has shown that he can bowl at the top and bowl in the death as well. Jasprit Bumrah if still fit ahead of the World Cup will be part of the 15.
Rahul is in better physical condition than Shreyas Iyer at the moment. So he can still make the fifteen and be a backup wicketkeeper and batter. Ravi Bishnoi could make the cut to the squad and be a backup to either Kuldeep or Chahal.
