The all-important Super 4 Match in Asia Cup between India and Sri Lanka got underway on Tuesday at Dubai. Sri Lanka were coming into the match after a thumping win against Bangladesh while India were coming from a loss against Pakistan. The Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the crucial toss and invited India to bat first.
The Indian openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul walked out to give a blistering start to the team. But all their hopes were crushed as KL Rahul returned back to the pavilion with just 11 on the board. Sri Lanka gave another huge blow to India with Dilshan Madushanka cleaning up Virat Kohli for a duck.
The Indian innings was rescued by Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, both of whom added 97 runs for the third wicket. Rohit Sharma looked in good touch as he began smashing Sri Lankan bowlers all around the park. He was finally dismissed after scoring 72 off 41 balls. Yadav was also dismissed soon after that with the score on 119 on the board. Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant added 30 runs for the fifth wicket.
However, after their dismissals, Indian innings lost their way. A brilliant cameo of 15 runs off just 7 balls by Ravichandran Ashwin took India’s total to 173.
Sri Lankan openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis came out with clear intent of scoring quickly and put the Indian bowlers under pressure. Indian bowlers looked helpless in front of the Sri Lankan bowlers as they began plundering them all around the park. Men in Blue looked distraught as the openers scored freely and threatened to take the game away from them.
Yuzvendra Chahal came to India’s rescue removing Nisanka and Charith Asalanka in the same over. Ashwin also joined the party removing Danushka Gunathilaka in the 14th over. Chahal got another wicket removing the dangerous Mendis. Sri Lanka, suddently, were four down for 110 after 14.1 overs.
Seeing their team in trouble, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka came together at the crease and got involved in a match-winning 64-run partnership. Sri Lanka handed a humiliating defeat to India and knocked them out of the Asia Cup 2022.
