The No 4 slot has been a thorn for India since the 2019 World Cup as they have not zeroed on on the perfect candidate. In the last 50-over World Cup, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Vijay Shankar and Rishabh Pant were tried at number 4 and it was not smooth sailing for all of them. They could not seal a spot because there were no game-changing performances.

Ahead of the 2023 World Cup Rohit Sharma said that no spot in the Indian Team is a guarantee. He said the same goes for him despite being skipper of the national side. "No one is an automatic (selection), even I am not. We have this thing where nobody is guaranteed a spot. We cannot say that 'you are there after all' or things like that," Rohit said as quoted by PTI.

Everyone has to fight for their spots - Rohit Sharma

"Yes, some players know that they are going to play but at this point in time, playing three ODIs in the West Indies was a good opportunity to look at a few guys. In the Asia Cup, again, we will face good opposition," Rohit added further. The ODIs in the Asia Cup are going to be very important for India to fix any flaws so that they can pick a final squad very easily.

"The selection (meeting) will be there in a few days, we will have a good debate about what we can do. But honestly, nobody is an automatic choice they all have to fight for the spot everyone has to, whether it is a top spot or a bottom spot," Rohit further said. With KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer uncertain to make the cut as they are coming of injuries, it will be interesting to see how India's middle order shapes up.

India won the ODI series in the West Indies 2-1. There were a lot of experiments conducted. Ishan Kishan was asked to bat in the top order. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma did not play the last two ODIs in the Caribbean. Suryakumar Yadav batted at number 6 in the third ODI.
