Ajinkya Rahane is set to pull out of Leicestershire and miss the One-Day Cup, England’s domestic One Day tournament. He will take a short break from competitive cricket and reasoned a hectic schedule behind his decision. The decision was made public by Leicestershire on Saturday, July 29, but he will take part in the matches from early September, the club maintained.

The 35-year-old featured in the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2021-23 against Australia and the two-game Test series against West Indies in their tour of the Caribbean. Notably, this Test series was India’s inaugural Test series in the new cycle of the World Test Championship. The red-ball specialist was impressive in the WTC final against the ‘Men from down under’, scoring 89 off 129 and 46 off 108 in the two innings, respectively. However, he suffered a dip in form in the Tests against West Indies. He scored 3 off 11 in the first Test and 8 off 36 in the second Test.

Leicester will start their Royal London One-Day Cup against Kent in Group B on August 5. The club confirmed that the Indian veteran will miss the tournament. "With those involvements previously not factored into his schedule, the 35-year-old has now expressed his desire to take a break from cricket during August and September," Leicestershire said in an official statement.

Their Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson also sympathised with Rahane’s situation. "Firstly, we are fully understanding of Ajinkya's situation. He has experienced a hectic schedule in recent months, both in India and travelling with the national team, and we accept his wishes to recover and spend some time with his family," Claude Henderson said. "We have been in constant communication with Ajinkya and accept how situations can change quickly in cricket. He is extremely grateful for our understanding and still hopes to play for Leicestershire one day," he further added.
