Mohammad Rizwan was absolutely superb during the 20-20 World Cup 2022. He was consistently scoring runs, and played an influential role in ensuring that Pakistan reach the semi-final of the tournament.

As a matter of fact, he scored a 52-ball 67 against Australia during the semis. However, it is to be noted that the keeper-batter was suffering from a severe chest infection at that time, and had been admitted to the ICU before the knockout game against the Aussies. However, Rizwan might find himself in deep trouble for the same.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) doctor Najeebullah Soomro has gone on to make a shocking claim about Rizwan with respect to him playing the all-important semi-final of the 20-20 WC 2021. He recently said that he gave the 29-year-old a prohibited substance at the time of the semis. He stated that he had no other option but to do the same. Further on, the doctor revealed that he had to take permission from cricket's apex body to inject the prohibited substance into Rizwan.

“You were unable to breathe and I have to get permission from the ICC to inject that medicine to help you recover. Usually, it is prohibited for the athletes but since there was no other option available, we have to take permission from the ICC to inject that medicine,” said Dr. Soomro while conducting an interview with Rizwan.

However, despite Rizwan playing the game and scoring a half-century, it went in vain as Australia beat Pakistan to proceed to the final, and eventually won the WC as well. In the meanwhile, Saheer Sainalabdeen, who happens to be a Specialist Pulmonologist at Medeor Hospital, said that he was astonished at Rizwan's immediate recovery. An important point to be noted is that he had treated Rizwan. He spoke about how the Pakistan cricketer was determined to play the game at any cost. Saheer also revealed that it usually takes weeks for the infection (which Rizwan had) to be cured.

“Rizwan had a strong desire to play for his nation in the crucial knockout match. He was strong, determined, and confident. I am astonished at the pace he had recovered. His pain at the time of admission was 10/10. So, we subjected him for a detailed evaluation to diagnose the condition.

Esophageal spasms can feel like sudden and severe chest pain that lasts for a few minutes to hours. Rizwan had a severe infection. Recovery and gaining fitness before the semifinal seemed unrealistic. It would have normally taken 5-7 days for anybody to recover,” said Saheer Sainalabdeen.
