Shimron Hetmyer was dropped from the West Indies squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup earlier today. Shamarh Brooks has been named to take his place. This follows the failure of the star batter to make his rescheduled flight to Australia.
Hetmyer's rescheduled flight to Australia was moved from Saturday (1 October) to Sunday (2 October) at his request, according to an official release issued by Cricket West Indies on Monday. The West Indies batter chose to reschedule his flight to Australia due to family duties.
A seat was made available for Hetmyer during a period of extremely limited flight availability, and the star player was scheduled to arrive in Guyana on Monday. Hetmyer, on the other hand, informed West Indies Cricket's director that he would be unable to make his rescheduled flight on time. As a result, Cricket West Indies has decided to drop Hetmyer from the West Indies squad for the World Cup in 2022.
“Whilst we changed Shimron’s flight from Saturday to Monday due to family reasons, it was made clear to him that if there were any further delays and issues with his travel to Australia then we would have no choice but to replace him in the squad, as we are not prepared to compromise the team’s ability to prepare for this extremely important global event,” West Indies Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams said.
“Shamarh has been a part of our recent T20 International squads and delivered strong performances in the latter stages of the recently concluded CPL. He will fly out as soon as possible this week to Australia and I wish him and all the squad all the very best for the Tournament,” he added.
In the meantime, fans have been lauding Cricket West Indies for sticking to their gun. "‘Missed the flight to the World Cup’ quite literally. Bizarre to say the least," Aakash Chopra tweeted.
Here is how Twitter reacted
A West Indies T20 World Cup squad that left out Andre Russell for poor form and Sunil Narine because the selector wasn’t sure if he wanted to play will be without Shimron Hetmyer because he missed his flight to Australia. Incredible #T20WorldCup2022

BCCI should include this as next excuses instead of giving "Injury excuses" all the time

If Hetmyer was a desi, this would have never happened. His family would have dropped him off 4 hours before the time of departure telling him 'ab jitna souna hai jahaaz mein beth k souna'. https://t.co/v40kyYKi6a
