In the IPL 2023 Qualifier 2, Shubman Gill displayed his great batting prowess by scoring 129 runs in a brilliant innings to lead Gujarat Titans to a convincing victory over Mumbai Indians. The victory sent the Titans into the IPL final game for the second year in a row. On May 28, GT will play Chennai Super Kings.

Gill's genius was immediately apparent as he and Wriddhiman Saha established a great starting duo, leading the Titans to a reliable 50/0 after the powerplay overs. Gill maintained his command of the match even after Saha was dismissed by carefully planning out his innings. In the later half, he demonstrated a mix of strategic boundaries and forceful shots, hitting his half-century in only 32 balls.

Gill's scoring rate rose as the innings went on. His blistering performance, which included 10 magnificent sixes and seven excellent boundaries, helped the Titans reach their highest-ever IPL total of 233 runs. Suryakumar Yadav put in a heroic effort, scoring 61 runs in 38 balls, but the Mumbai Indians could only muster 171 runs in return.

Kapil Dev, the Indian captain who led his country to victory in the 1983 World Cup, praised Gill and said the 23-year-old is following in the footsteps of legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, and Virat Kohli. However, Kapil Dev refrained from making strong statements about Gill because he believes the young batsman needs to show more maturity.

"Sunil Gavaskar came, Sachin Tendulkar came, then Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, and now with the kind of batting he is showing, it appears that Shubman Gill is following their footsteps. But I will like to give him another season (before making big claims). He definitely has the talent and ability but he needs more maturity," Kapil Dev said on ABP News.

"If he plays another season like this, there is no doubt that he too could be included in the list of great players. But I would not like to take him to that league currently. Maybe he needs to give one more year. It's too early (to say)," he added.

Maturity? I am curious to know what Kapil meant by that. From what we can see, Gill seems to have a calm head and seems to be very mature for his age.
