The Pakistan vs New Zealand test series was in the bad books across the internet for the poor pitch. It was a batsman’s dream surface in Pakistan where batsmen scored at ease and the bowlers struggled to pick wickets. Across the eight innings of the games, there were more declarations than all-outs. However, the second test getting a draw is one of the best results of the game that the sport has ever seen.
When the final day started in Karachi, Pakistan had already lost the two wickets and the scorer was unharmed. Pakistan needed 319 runs from 90 overs with eight wickets in hand. The task of drawing the game also looked monumental.
The dark clouds hovered around Pakistan when they found themselves at 80 for the loss of five wickets. The home side had already lost the likes of Babar Azam and Shan Masood. The defeat was staring in front of them. However, the in-form batsman Saud Shakeel and veteran Sarfaraz Ahmed had different plans. The stitched a 123-run partnership between them to take Pakistan above 200. The victory seemed closer but Bracewell struck the wicket to push Pakistan back.
Sarfaraz Ahmed anchored on one end and held the fort and gave license to Agha Salman to go all guns blazing. The player scored at a strike rate of 75 to bring Pakistan closer to the winning margin. As Pakistan lost three wickets in five overs in the fag end of the day, they needed 32 runs from the last wicket in 21 deliveries.
The Kiwis had an upper hand but Pakistani tailenders had different plans. Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed dug deep to salvage the draw in front of the home crowd. Sarfaraz Ahmed was adjudged Man of the Match for his half century in the first innings and a century in the second innings against the Kiwis.
