The much anticipated Ashes series began at Edgbaston when England took on Australia in the first Test of the series on 16 June 2023. All fans were eagerly waiting to see how the new playing approach, named ‘Bazball’ would work out against the World Test Champion, Australia. Speaking of the match, Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bat first.
While batting first, England declared their first innings on 393 runs for eight wickets in 78 overs. It was quite a surprising decision from the England skipper to declare the innings on day one when Joe Root was batting on 118* runs off 152 balls, including seven fours and four sixes. For Australia, Nathan Lyon took four wickets for 149 runs in 29 overs. Then, Australia batted for just four overs and finished day one with 14 runs on board for no loss of wickets.

On day two, Australia batted the whole day and finished the day with 311 runs on the board for five wickets. Usman Khawaja was batting 126* runs along with Alex Carey’s 52* runs. Then, England bowlers made a comeback in the first session of day three and the Aussies got bundled out for 386 runs in 116.1 overs. Khawaja scored 141 runs off 321 balls, including 14 fours and three sixes. For England, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson grabbed three wickets each. Thus, England got a lead of seven runs and in the second innings, England got bundled out for 273 runs in 66.2 overs. Both Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon took four wickets each. Thus, the Aussies got a target of 281 runs.
However, they finished day four with 107 runs on board for three wickets. On day five, Australia needed 174 runs with seven wickets in hand. But, the first session got washed off due to rain. Then, in the next two sessions, England managed to take crucial wickets at regular intervals. When Khawaja got dismissed for 65 runs, the Aussies were on 209 runs for seven wickets. Then, Alex Carey departed and they needed 54 runs with just two wickets in hand. But, skipper Pat Cummins (44* runs) and Nathan Lyon (16* runs) held their nerves and completed the chase successfully in 92.3 overs. Thus, Australia defeated England in a thriller of a match by two wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the series. Usman Khawaja won the Player of the Match award for his batting performances in both innings.
