Sri Lanka and Australia faced each other in the second game of the two-match Test series in Galle between 8th and 12th July 2022. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat first looking at the record of the venue. At this venue, teams batting first have won most Tests. Batting first, Australia were looking great to amass a huge first-innings total at one stage.

The team was going well 204/2 at one stage. Marnus Labuschagne (104) scored another Test-match hundred. Prabhat Jayasuriya, who was making his debut, lured Marnus out of the crease and got him stumped. After this, the Aussies kept losing regular wickets and were all-out for 364. In the meantime, Steven Smith (145*) scored his Test hundred after one and a half years. Jayasuriya took a six-wicket haul.

In reply, the Lankans lost the early wicket of Pathum Nissanka but kept the innings going. Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne (86), Kusal Mendis (85), and Angelo Mathews (52) provided a great foundation. Dinesh Chadimal scored an unbeaten 206 runs while Kamindu Mendis (61) made an impact on his debut. The team scored 556 runs. Notably, this was the first time since the 90's when the Lions had scored more than 500 runs against the world number One Test side.

Also, not to forget, poor umpiring and reviews from Pat Cummins also helped the Dimuth Karunaratne's side's cause. Nathan Lyon made a record of bowling 64 overs in the game. He took only two wickets. His spin partner, Mitchell Swepson bowled 38 overs and picked three wickets. Leading by 190 runs, the home team was pretty much assured of not losing the game even if the opposition outscore them.
