Legendary New Zealand batter Martin Guptill is currently participating in the ongoing Legends League Cricket. In the T20 tournament, various cricket veterans are fighting for the cup. During his time in India, Guptill spoke about the impact of his four-year-old throw, which broke a billion hearts in India.
It was the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2019, and India was looking in trouble while Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja were trying to pull off a victory. Dhoni, while trying to steal an extra run, caught well short of the crease as Guptill removed the bails. This runout not only pushed India out of the tournament but also marked Dhoni's last international game. However, while speaking about its impact on him, Guptill reveals that he still receives hate mail.
While speaking with a media house, Guptill says, "It's one of those things that happened so quickly at the moment. All I remember is that I saw the ball go up, and then I thought, Oh no, it's coming sort of more towards me. So I put the skates on to get on with that run. I knew there was no chance of a throw at the stumps, but I just tried to have a shot and only had one and a half stumps to aim at, and I just got lucky. The stars aligned, and it was a perfect throw."
"India doesn't like me," says Martin Guptill
Further, while speaking about its impact on Indian cricket fans, Guptill said that he receives a lot of hate mail as a whole, and India doesn't like him. He said, "In other words, the whole of India doesn't like me. I get plenty of hate mail from there." The 37-year-old cricketer further reveals that he is no longer an active international cricketer but is waiting for a national call.
He said, "No, I'm not an active international cricketer. I haven't finished playing cricket in New Zealand yet. But yes, I'm retired. For me, it was always going to be to retire after the 23rd World Cup and then look to play a few leagues around the world and see the way things transpired back home." It's worth noting that Guptill is currently playing for Urbanisers Hyderabad.
