Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka who was accused of a sexual assault in Sydney was arrested by the police in the wee hours of the 6th of November from Hyatt Regency Hotel on Sussex Street. Prior to that, the Sri Lankan team already took off leaving him in the aftermath of their defeat in the last super-12 match against England.
Subsequently, Gunathilaka was slapped with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent as he allegedly assaulted a 29-year-old lady in Sydney. Earlier, the two met each other virtually on a dating app. Furthermore, the court denied bail to the 31-year-old, which led the latter to police custody for 11 days.
Now, in a recent development, the court has granted bail to the Sri Lankan cricketer after hearing that he is being supported by the Sri Lankan cricket Association and government alongside a guarantee of $150,000.
Earlier, the lawyers of the Sri Lankan cricketer launched a second bail bid on the 14th of November.
Although, the matter was heard again in the Local Court of Sydney on Thursday, the 17th of November. Murugan Thangaraj made a bail application in for Gunathilaka’s release from custody.
Meanwhile, the police prosecutor Sergeant Kerry-Ann Mckinnon said;
“We accepted the material before the court, including new proposed bail conditions, and allowed the applicant to make a secondary application.”
Gunathilaka stayed with the team in Australia despite being ruled out
Talking about cricket, The Panadura-born cricketer was ruled out of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 as he sustained an injury during the qualifying round of the tournament. He could play only one match of the qualifying round for Sri Lanka.
However, he stayed there in Australia with the Sri Lankan despite being ruled out from the squad. Speaking of his individual performance in the tournament, Gunathilaka couldn’t even open his account and went back to the pavilion on a duck in the game against Namibia. Notably, Namibia stunned everyone by defeating Sri Lank with a margin of 53 runs in this match.
