Pakistan are the new number-one ranked team in ODIs and they began the ongoing Asia Cup with a massive win over Nepal on 30 August 2023 in Multan. But, it was not a good outing for Mohammad Rizwan as he got out in a bizarre way. In fact, it was not the first time as he has been getting out in some unfortunate ways consecutively in the last six games.
Here are the Last Six Unfortunate ODI Dismissals of Mohammad Rizwan:
Runout with direct hit vs Nepal, 30 August 2023:
It was the first match of the ongoing Asia Cup when Pakistan took on Nepal in Multan. Rizwan was looking solid but got out on 44 runs in a bizarre fashion. On the fourth delivery of the 24th over, Mohammad Rizwan went for a quick single but Dipendra Singh Airee picked up the ball and hit the stumps directly at the non-striker’s end.
The Pakistan wicketkeeper seemed to get out of the line of the ball as his bat and both feet were found in the air. Hence, this dismissal left fans surprised and he departed after putting up an 86-run partnership for the third wicket with Babar Azam. The Men in Green won that match by 238 runs.
LBW with unsuccessful review vs Afghanistan, 26 August 2023:
This dismissal took place in the third game of the ODI series against Afghanistan in Colombo. Pakistan batted first and after losing two openers cheaply, Rizwan was looking rock solid on his way to an ODI ton. But, on the second delivery of the 40th over, Mohammad Rizwan was given LBW as Fareed Ahmad’s delivery hit his pads after missing a flick.
Still, the Pakistan wicketkeeper went for a review and in replays, it was found that the ball was hitting the outer part of the leg stump. His team did not lose the review as it turned out to be an umpire’s call. But, it was enough for him to depart for 67 runs off 79 balls. Pakistan won that game by 59 runs and Rizwan was the Player of the Match.
Runout with direct hit vs Afghanistan, 24 August 2023:
It was the second game of the ODI series against Afghanistan in Hambantota and Mohammad Rizwan suffered another unfortunate dismissal. On the first delivery of the 34th over, Imam-ul-Haq called for a single after hitting the ball towards offside. But, there was some hesitation between him and Rizwan.
Still, they went for the risky run but that did not prevent Rizwan’s dismissal. Hashmatullah Shahidi fired in a direct throw from cover to the striker's end and the Pakistan wicketkeeper was found short of the crease. Rizwan got out on just two runs. But, his team won the game by one wicket while chasing 301 runs.
LBW with unsuccessful review vs Afghanistan, 22 August 2023:
This incident took place in the first game of the ODI series against Afghanistan in Hambantota. Pakistan were in a spot of bother after losing both Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam within the first two overs. Then, Mohammad Rizwan looked to settle the innings but on the fifth delivery of the eight over, he got out against Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
The Pakistan wicketkeeper was looking to defend the ball to the legside but it hit his back thigh. The umpire gave him out but he took an immediate review. But, in replies, it was found that there was no bat involved and the ball hit the top of the off stump. Thus, he got out for just 21 runs but Pakistan won the game by 142 runs.
LBW with unsuccessful review vs New Zealand, 7 May 2023:
It was the fifth game of the ODI series against New Zealand in Karachi. Pakistan were looking to chase down the 300-run target. But, they had a terrible start after losing two wickets for 30 runs. Then, Mohammad Rizwan also failed as Henry Shipley trapped him LBW on the fifth delivery of the 14th over.
The ball hit him plumb in front of the stumps as he was looking to defend it. Rizwan straightaway knew that he was in trouble. Still, he went for a review with a hope for an edge. But, replays confirmed that it was three reds and Rizwan’s team lost the review also. The Men in Green lost that game by 47 runs.
