Mohammed Siraj, the Indian pacer, is fast becoming India’s trusted pacer and the bowler is growing in stature with every passing game. For the unversed, the pacer is enjoying a purple patch and on January 25, Wednesday, Siraj became the new Number 1 bowler in ODIs, making the entire country and his family proud.
To add more, Siraj was trolled earlier for leaking runs soon after making his ODI debut in 2019 and since then, the pacer has been working hard to get his line and length right. Despite facing harsh criticism early on in his career, Siraj’s hard work is now paying him off as the right-armer has become India’s go-to bowler in crunch situations.
In the absence of Jasprit Bumah, the Mohammed Shami-Siraj duo is rattling the opponents, with Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Shardul Thakur and Hardik Pandya backing the duo in the middle overs. As far as his ODI records in 2022 are concerned, Siraj racked up 24 wickets to his name in the 15 matches that he played at an economy of under 5.
He understands what the team is expecting from him: Rohit Sharma
After clinching the series 3-0 against New Zealand, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma opened up on Siraj and lauded the pacer for standing up for the team as and when required. Saying that the right-armer has bloomed into a flawless bowler, Rohit said that his contribution would be vital for India in the coming days.
“I have spoken a lot about him. The more cricket he has played, he has become better in terms of understanding his bowling. I think in this game, it is understanding about what you can do. What is your ability? The moment you understand that I think you can be more effective for the team and Siraj has exactly done that in the last couple of years he has played,” Rohit was quoted as saying in the post-match press conference.
“Whichever format be it. He has done really well. He understands what the team is expecting from him. To come and take the new ball. To swing the ball, get early wickets. In the middle overs, again he has got so much skill. He can come and do all those kinds of skills. The more he plays, the better he gets,” he added.
