Gary Kirsten recently was seen as the batting coach and mentor of Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2023. Apart from IPL, in other franchise tournaments, he has his commitments. So, now, reports have come out in ESPNCricinfo that the Indian Cricket Board were looking to appoint him as the new head coach of the Indian Women’s team.

But, they did not manage him on board due to his commitments in the IPL and other leagues. Kirsten was the coach of the Men’s Indian team in 2011 and they managed to win the ODI World Cup that year in India, after a long gap of 28 years. So, fans have come up and shared their views on social media.

Still, the Board are looking for some big names as Amol Mazumdar is in contention. Along with him, the current interim head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar is also in the race. However, as per recent reports, Charlotte Edwards is another name that has come up. Edwards guided Mumbai Indians (MI) in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). However, it is expected to give a two-year contract to the new coach, keeping two major events in mind over the coming two years. The 20-20 World Cup is all set to happen in Bangladesh in 2024 while the ODI World Cup is going to happen in India in 2025.

GT failed to defend their title this season after winning that at their maiden attempt in 2022. However, defending a total was a problem for the team this season and during the tournament, Kirsten addressed it. During a virtual press conference, he said: "In the last IPL we defended four and chased down six games. This year we haven't defended a total yet but it is early days in the tournament. Last year we had a settled bowling line up. This year due to injuries and guys who we bank on in crucial overs, aren't necessarily ready to go."
