Tilak Varma is currently busy playing in the ongoing three-match T20I series in Ireland. However, in the first two matches, he failed to deliver but Tilak announced his arrival into International cricket in some style in the five-match T20I series in West Indies. He scored 173 runs in five innings, at an average of 57.66.

He also smashed one fifty and was the highest run-getter from the Indian side. But, some eyebrows were raised when he got selected in the 18-member squad of Team India for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, starting on 30 August. Now, in an exclusive chat with the Indian Cricket Board, Tilak said tha he is confident of doing well in the upcoming tournament.

“I was always dreaming that I would be debuting for India in ODIs.” - Tilak Varma

He said: "I never dreamed that I would be debuting directly in the Asia Cup, and that too in the one-day side. I was always dreaming that I would be debuting for India in ODIs. But it is a big thing for me. And I always dreamed of this, like debuting for India in ODIs, that too, in like, a single year, I got my T20I debut and suddenly, in the next month, I'm just getting a call for the Asia Cup. So yeah, it is one of my dreams and I'm just preparing for it."

"I'm pretty confident about playing one day cricket because I have played ODI cricket for long as you said, like in the List A cricket. I have done well in List A cricket for my state and the teams also have done well, so I'm pretty confident that I can do well in ODIs, so I'm looking forward to it," he concluded.

Regarding his selection, the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar said: “Tilak Varma is promising. Asia Cup is a big opportunity for him. We saw some real promise not only in terms of performances but also temperament during the T20I series against West Indies. This will give him exposure. He is also a left-hander."
