Chennai’s new opening pair of Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad stitched a record 182-run partnership against Hyderabad at Maharashtra Cricket Stadium in Pune on Sunday. For those of you who don't know, it is also the highest partnership for Chennai by any wicket in the history of the Indian T20 League. The partnership helped the team reach a mammoth score of 202 runs in the first innings.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway made a decent start in the powerplay. The duo added 40 runs in the first six overs but ensured they didn’t lose a wicket. However, once the field opened up Ruturaj Gaikwad changed gears. Devon Conway, however, at the other end, was slowly getting his rhythm back.
From the 8th over onwards, the duo kept finding boundaries regularly and hit shots all around the ground. Gaikwad was the aggressor of the two, while Conway was happy to play as the second fiddle. However, after the first half of the innings, both of them took the attacking route. The young Indian opener went on to score an outstanding knock of 99 runs in 57 balls, a knock which was studded with 6 fours and 6 sixes. He, unfortunately, missed out on a hundred.
Barring Bhuvneshwar Kumar, both Gaikwad and Conway spared none of the bowlers. Prior to this game, Gaikwad didn’t have a great season with the bat. He couldn’t hit a single half-century in the tournament. However, after today’s heroic knock, he now has 140 runs to his name in 9 matches at an average of 17.5.
Making his comeback in the playing XI, Devon Conway played an unbeaten sensational knock of 85 runs in 55 balls, including 8 fours and 4 sixes. Thanks to those valuable knocks, Chennai have managed to notch a mammoth score of 202 runs at the end of the first innings. Hyderabad need 203 runs to win the match and return to winning ways.
The fans of Chennai franchise loved how the openers batted in the first innings. Here’s a look at how the fans reacted to the Chennai’s innings:
