The final day of the league stage of Lanka Premier League saw Jeff Vandersay decimate Kandy Warriors to crash their hopes of making it to the next round. Colombo stars were struggling with the poor run of their senior batters. However, the big guns brushed off their poor form and came out all guns blazing against Kandy. Kusal Perera set the tone for a big score with a blazing 58 off 38 balls.
While Ashan Priyanjan was dismissed for a golden duck, Dhananjaya de Silva ensured that all burden of scoring does not come on Kusal Perera. Dhananjaya and Perera added 79 runs for the second wicket in just 45 balls. Later in the innings, Dinesh Chandimal (44 off 28) and Angelo Matthews (29 off 16) helped Stars push the target to 182-6. Given the wicket, this was a mammoth total to chase for Warriors, who were struggling with the bat throughout the tournament.
Ravi Bopara has been the lone warrior for Kandy and the recent game was no different. Bopara top-scored for Kandy with 47 runs but got no support from the other end as spin twins Jeff Vandersay and Seekkuge Prasanna ran through their batting order. Warriors were bowled out for 124 in 17 overs, losing by 58 runs.
In the previous game, Galle Gladiators picked up a surprise win over Jaffna Kings. Kings have been ruthless in the tournament, with their batters and bowlers in top form. However, they had a rare off day and were bowled out for 109 in a chase of 130. Earlier, Gladiators failed to put a decent score and could only manage 129-8. However, their bowling stepped up to help them win the game by 20 runs.
