The Sri Lankan team is currently going through a lean patch in international cricket as they have a very weakened team right now. Recently, they lost to Afghanistan in the first match of their campaign in the Asia Cup 2022. Now, the Lankan tigers will face Bangladesh in their second group match of the tournament.
On the other hand, Bangladesh also lost their first match in the tournament which they played against Afghanistan. Now both teams will face each other to secure a berth in the super four round of the tournament. Notably, Mohammad Nabi & co has become the first team of the tournament to reach the super four round.
The controversy started after the comments of Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka on Bangladesh's bowling
Apart from other things, the Sri Lankan skipper has ignited a controversy just before the commencement of the match against Bangladesh. He went on to say that Bangladesh hasn’t any world-class bowlers except two.
"Afghanistan has a world-class bowling attack. We know Fizz is a good bowler. Shakib is a world-class bowler. But apart from them, there is no world-class bowler in the side. So, if we compare with Afghanistan, Bangladesh is an easier opponent," said Dasun Shanaka in the pre-match press conference
These comments from the Sri Lankan skipper didn’t go down well with the Bangladeshi coach Khaled Mahmud, and he replied back to it in the pre-match press conference of Bangladesh.
"I don't know why Dasun made that comment. Definitely, Afghanistan has a better squad. He said we have only two bowlers in our line-up, but I don't see any bowlers in Sri Lanka. At least Bangladesh has world-class bowlers like Mustafiz and Shakib. They don't even have that. It is not about the words. It is about how you play the game," said Mahmud on the eve before the match against Sri Lanka
But this controversy didn’t stop here only, and later on, former Sri Lankan skipper and legendary batter Mahela Jayawardena also jumped in with a response to the comments of the Bangladeshi coach. Jayawardena tweeted that “Looks like it’s time for @OfficialSLC bowlers to show the class and batters to show who they are on the field..😉👍#AsiaCup2022.”
Now, it will be interesting to see what will be the result of the match between the two teams after this verbal war before the match.
