Indian cricket fans have been talking about Ruturaj Gaikwad and his incredible run in the recently finished Vijay Hazare Trophy. In just five games, he amassed 660 runs at a staggering average of 220. He scored four centuries in the total runs, including the unbeaten 220 against Uttar Pradesh where Gaikwad set a world record by smashing seven sixes in a single over.
India is becoming a difficult country to gaenuinely play cricket: Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin, a seasoned cricketer for India, pointed out a harsh reality regarding Gaikwad's chances of making the Indian team despite the sensational run. Gaikwad is mainly used as an opener. Ashwin noted the players the youngster is looking to compete against to get a chance in the squad, let alone the XI. The youngster's impressive run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy makes a strong case for his call-up to India once again.
"Since he is from India, whom will he replace? Not even replace but look at whom he is competing with. Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and we have Rishabh Pant opening as well," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
"India is becoming a difficult country to genuinely play cricket. I mean, competition for one spot is heating up. And Ruturaj is not heating it up; he has taken the solar panel on his head and scored runs for fun. Amazing, very well done, Ruturaj Gaikwad.
"I am sure all the CSK fans are super happy. It will be a matter of time before Ruturaj Gaikwad sets the world stage on fire," he added.
Gaikwad did well not only in the Vijay Hazare Trophy but also in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, where he scored 295 runs in six games. India has chosen Rohit, Dhawan, and KL Rahul as the openers for the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh, along with backups Pant and Ishan Kishan. The first match of the series will go underway today at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.
