Chennai won the toss and invited Mumbai to bat first. Mumbai started in the worst way possible losing two wickets in the very first over. Both the openers for the men in blue and gold were dismissed before they could get off the mark. Wickets kept tumbling for Mumbai and they found themselves at 47 for four in the eighth over. Two youngsters in Hrithik Shokeen and Tilak Varma staged a partnership of 38 runs from there and stabilized the innings. But in the 14th over Shokeen (25 off 25) was dismissed and Mumbai was down to 85 for 5.

Tilak Varma however looked unfazed by the wickets falling around him and continued steadily. He stayed unbeaten till the end of the Mumbai innings scoring 51 off 43 balls. Jaydev Unadkat played a brilliant cameo in the lower order of 19 runs from 9 deliveries and Mumbai managed to reach a respectable total of 155 runs in their 20 overs. The total looked more than decent given the fact that they were 27 for 3 down at one stage. Mukesh Choudhary was the best bowler for Chennai picking up three wickets from his three overs conceding just 19 runs.

Chennai's start was similar to Mumbai's as they also lost their first wicket without a run being scored. Chennai's bet of sending Mitchell Santner did not pay off as he was dismissed at a score of 11 off 9, when the team's score was just 16 runs from 2.3 overs. Chennai was desperately looking for a partnership and the senior pros in Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu provided that. They took the team's score to 66 runs with a 50 runs partnership and brought back Chennai into the match. Uthappa was dismissed by Unadkat when he was batting on 30 off 24 deliveries and now the men in yellow were three down for 66 runs.

Chennai lost two more wickets and one of these was that of Ambati Rayudu (40 off 35) who looked set in the middle. By the end of the 15th over Chennai was five down for 103 runs needing 53 runs of five overs. With the batting still left for the men in yellow, they were still in the match. But they were not able to put together a partnership as wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Chennai needed a miracle to win the match at this stage. Dwaine Pretorius and MS Dhoni were doing their best to pull off the miracle and got Chennai within touching distance of a victory. The men in yellow needed 17 runs from the last over of the match. Pretorius (22 off 14) was dismissed of the first ball of the final over but MS Dhoni (28 off 13) turned the clock back and scored 16 runs form the last four balls to win the match for Chennai. This was their second win of the campaign while Mumbai are still to taste victory after seven matches in the tournament.
