The first-ever edition of the Women’s Indian T20 League is going to kick off in 2023. However, the Indian Cricket Board have sold five teams of the league for Rs. 4,669.99 crores. Even, the media rights of the league have been sold to Viacom18 for Rs. 951 crores, Rs. 7.09 crore per match value for five years.
After such achievements, Jay Shah tweeted: “Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for teams of inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s Indian T20 League in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we garnered ₹4,669.99 Cr in total bid.”
Mithali Raj scored 2364 runs in 84 innings, at an average of 37.52
After such an announcement, reports came out that veteran players like Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami might look to come out of retirement to play in this league. Even, Mithali Raj said: “I’m keeping that option open. I’ve not yet decided. There are a few more months to go before the women’s Indian T20 League happens. It would be lovely to be part of the first edition of the Women’s Indian T20 League.” But, on 27 January, as per News18 reports came out that the former India skipper is going to join the Gujarat franchise as a mentor, not as a player.
A source close to the developments said: “Mithali Raj was keen to play but she is now all set to mentor the Gujarat team for the inaugural Women’s Premier League. Yes, there was interest from her side to play, particularly for the team based out of Mumbai but things didn’t quite materialise the way she would have wanted and a lucrative role with the Gujarat team came her way. It’s always good to have the presence of someone like Mithali in the camp. The vast experience across formats will only benefit the team she is going to be a part of.” After seeing such reports, fans came up with some mixed reactions. Some fans also claimed that the Gujarat franchise might struggle under her guidance as she was not a prolific player, especially in the shortest format of the game.
Here is how fans have reacted to the reports of Mithali Raj joining the Gujarat franchise as a mentor:
