New Zealand took on Afghanistan in their fourth match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. Both teams played this match in Chennai at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday. The Kiwis completely outmuscled Afghanistan and won the match by a massive margin of 149 runs to continue their winning run in the tournament so far.

New Zealand posted a big total of 288 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the allotted 50 overs after being asked to bat first by the toss-winning Afghan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi. The opener will Young scored a crucial half-century, with 54 runs, hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes with the bat.

Later, skipper Tom Latham and star middle-order batter Glenn Phillips stayed there in the middle to stabilize the Kiwi innings after a sudden downfall from 109 runs for the loss of 1 wicket to 110 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Latham and Phillips added a 144-run partnership for the fifth wicket to help New Zealand post a winning total on the board.

While defending the target, the Kiwi bowlers bundled out the Afghanistan on the score of only 139 runs in 34.4 overs. Number three batter Rahmat Shah was the highest run-scorer for Afghanistan in the second innings with a knock of 36 runs. Mitchell Santner and Lockie Ferguson scalped three wickets each for the Blackcaps, including two wickets picked by star pace spearhead Trent Boult at the cost of just 18 runs in his 7 overs.

Other than these three, Matt Henry and Rachin Ravindra also bagged one wicket each. Eventually, Tom Latham’s men won their fourth consecutive match in the ODI World Cup 2023 by a big margin of 149 runs. Glenn Phillips won the ‘Player of the Match award for his excellent match-defining knock.
