Suryakumar Yadav came up with a match-winning knock in the third game of the ongoing five-match T20I series against West Indies in Providence. His knock helped India to register their first win of the series and keep themselves alive with two more matches to go. But, in recent matches, especially in ODIs, this batter has failed miserably so far. Currently, he is the number one-ranked batter in the shortest format of the game.
But, in 26 ODIs so far, he has scored 511 runs, at an average of 24.33 with a strike rate of 101.38. He has scored only two fifties so far. He won the Player of the Match award for scoring 83 runs off 44 balls in the third T20I. But, during the post-match press conference, he came up and admitted his poor show in the ODI format so far. Seeing such an honest acceptance from the batter, fans lauded him and shared their views on social media.
“But we do not play a lot of one-dayers, and ODI is the most challenging format” - Suryakumar Yadav
He said: "My ODI numbers are very poor and there is no shame in accepting that. Being honest is very important because everyone knows that, because we all talk about honesty. So it is very important to stay honest about your performance. But what is more important is how to improve that".
"Now what the team management has told me about that format, I am just trying to apply that in ODIs. Take some time, do as per the team's requirement and play my game towards the end. I will just look to live up to the expectations of the team management and repay their faith,” he further added.
"We have played a lot of T20Is, so it has become a habit. We play T20 regularly, and all we need to do is express ourselves. But we do not play a lot of one-dayers, and ODI is the most challenging format,” Suryakumar Yadav concluded.
