The stage was set at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on 21 May 2023 when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) took on Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing IPL. His knock helped GT to chase down the target of 198 runs in 19.1 overs. Virat Kohli smashed his seventh IPL ton and second back-to-back centuries this year. While Gill also smashed second back-to-back centuries to seal the deal for GT. Seeing such an outrageous knock from the star batter, LSG came up with a tweet and called Gill ‘King’.

I know my game... for any player it's important to know who you are.” - Shubman Gill

It seemed the LSG franchise took an indirect dig at Virat Kohli. Speaking of the tweet, they wrote: “Prince? He's already a (king’s crown emoji).” Speaking of the knock, Shubman Gill smashed five fours and eight sixes throughout the innings. He also put up a partnership of 123 runs for the second wicket with Vijay Shankar.

During the post-match presentation, Gill said: “It's all about getting a start and converting it into a big one. Thankfully it's working out for me in the business end. You have to keep applying yourself, that's important. The new ball was holding on a bit. The ball was getting wet with the dew. I thought Vijay Shankar was trying to go too hard. Once he found the momentum, he hit it a long way. I know my game... for any player it's important to know who you are. I think we have a great bowling attack for that wicket."

GT skipper, Hardik Pandya also heaped praises as he said: “As a bowler, Gill doesn't give you a chance. Other batters also get confidence from it.” However, many fans were not happy with such a tweet and as a result, they shared their views on social media.
