Team India began the second match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia on 17 February 2023. The match took place in Delhi after the series opener happened in Nagpur. However, Shreyas Iyer missed the first Test due to a back injury. But, he rejoined the team for the second Test.
So, fans were hoping to see him back in the playing XI in place of Suryakumar Yadav. Ahead of this match, Rahul Dravid also said that Shreyas Iyer will walk straight into the side if he passes the fitness Tests and feels fine after batting sessions. Shreyas Iyer made his Test debut in November 2021 against the Kiwis in Kanpur where he scored a century.

While speaking to reporters, Dravid said: "We'll take a call after a couple of days of training. He's had a long session today in terms of training today, we'll assess it tomorrow as well, once he comes in for a light hit, and see how he feels in the evening. But certainly, if he's fit and ready to go and ready to take the load of a five-day Test match, then it is without doubt that his performance means he will walk straight into the side." Shreyas Iyer played the last Test series in Bangladesh.
In that series, he scored 202 runs in three innings. After that, he played the three-match ODI series against the Lankans at home. In that series, Iyer scored 94 runs in three matches. Speaking of the match, Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first. Rohit Sharma also confirmed that Shreyas Iyer has been considered in the playing XI in place of Suryakumar Yadav.
