On 12 July 2023, Team India locked horns with the West Indies in Dominica in the first game of the two-match series. India handed a debut to Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan. On the eve of the clash, skipper Rohit Sharma confirmed that Shubman Gill himself wanted to bat at the number three position as he had a chat with the head coach, Rahul Dravid.

So, Rohit confirmed that Yashasvi Jaiswal would be his new opening partner and claimed that he looked very promising. He said: "Indian cricket desperately needed a left-hander and we found a very good player. Looks very promising." Speaking of the match, West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first.

However, India's bowlers were all over them as the home side got bundled out for 150 runs in 64.3 overs. Then, all eyes were on Jaiswal and Rohit when they came out to bat. After some nervy moments earlier into their innings, they both managed to hand there and India finished day one with 80 runs on the board without losing any one of them. Jaiswal was on 40* runs and the skipper was on 30* runs. On day two, both these batters came out as India were trailing by 70 runs.

But, these batters continuously managed to show their grittiness as Jaiswal hit his maiden fifty. Rohit also crossed the 50-run mark. But, the ultimate moment came when Yashasvi Jaiswal reached the three-figure mark. Jaiswal scored the century on his debut innings off 215 balls and became the third Indian opener to do so. However, it was the first time when an Indian opener scored a century in his overseas debut innings. Along with him, Rohit also managed to score his 10th Test century. He hit that century off 220 balls. But, the Team India skipper fell just after that as he got out on 103 runs off 221 balls, including 10 fours and two sixes. After 76 overs, India scored 229 runs for one wicket and gained a lead of 79 runs.
