On 9 February 2023, all fans were eagerly waiting for the kick-off of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Finally, the series began when India took on the Aussies in Nagpur. Meanwhile, ahead of the series, fans were wondering if KL Rahul gets a chance or not. Some fans even raised their voices to play him or Suryakumar Yadav in the middle order while playing Shubman Gill as one of the openers.

However, the former India cricketer, Harbhajan Singh also shared his predicted playing XI ahead of the match. He also did not consider Rahul in his team. Apart from him, Kapil Dev also said that Gill should play and there should be no rule of playing KL Rahul as he is the vice-captain of the team.

KL Rahul scored 20 runs off 71 balls against the Aussies on day one  

While speaking on Uncut, Kapil Dev said: "Why can't he be dropped? There should be no such rule. You need to look at team combination, who do we need. There is no necessity. In Indian cricket, I don't think there is ever a vice-captain. Back in the day, we had a new VC in every Test match. He is a very mature player; I even like him. I consider him to be a fine batter but if he doesn't fit in the team, then let it be. The team comes first and I guess for that the captain and the management need to take a call. Some players are lucky. Rahul Dravid too played many such matches where he was made to keep wicket."

But, after Rohit Sharma lost the toss, he confirmed that Shubman Gill is not in the team while Suryakumar Yadav got a debut cap. Meanwhile, Australia got bundled out for just 177 runs in 63.5 overs. In reply, KL Rahul and skipper Rohit Sharma came out to open the innings. But, Rahul failed once again as he scored only 20 runs off 71 balls, including one boundary. Debutant Todd Murphy took his wicket and fans were not happy with that. Even, the batter was disappointed as it was the second last over of day one. After another failure from him, fans came up with some hilarious memes on social media platforms.
