The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday, 10th November announced the 16-member squad for the three-match T20I series versus New Zealand, which is scheduled to begin on November 17. The squad saw a lot of senior players, including Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah being rested.

BCCI also included a few fresh faces like Venkatesh Iyer, Avesh Khan, and Harshal Patel in the squad. However, there was one notable omission in the form of Sanju Samson. The Rajasthan Royals captain had a good season of the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL). He scored 484 runs in 14 games and was the team’s highest run-getter. He also ably led the team sans a few senior players, who were out due to injury or personal reasons.

The elegant right-hand batter hardly broke a sweat scoring those runs and made batting look ridiculously easy. In all the previous IPL seasons, Samson was guilty of playing two or three good knocks and later throwing away all the hard work by getting out cheaply. This time, with the additional responsibility of leadership, Samson was a man possessed with a mission.

His sublime form was also appreciated by Royals director Kumar Sangakkara, who said the wicketkeeper-batter can serve India for long term. The wait though continues for Samson as Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan were preferred for the wicketkeeping roles. Notably, the Rajasthan Royals skipper was with the side for the team’s limited-overs series against Sri Lanka. However, he had mediocre outings which might have spoiled his case.

Fans were unhappy seeing Samson's omission and took to Twitter to express their disappointment.
