India lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah is reportedly set to lead the Indian team for the fifth Test against England. The situation has arrived after regular skipper Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID -19 on June 25. With the five-day isolation in place for Covid patients in the United Kingdom, it seems rather unlikely that Sharma will play the game starting on July 1. Former India skipper Virat Kohli isn't likely to lead the team again.
With KL Rahul ruled out due to a groin injury and Rishabh Pant didn't look convincing against South Africa, Jasprit Bumrah might lead the team in the must-win game. This will be the first time since 1987 that a pacer is leading the Indian team in Tests. In that year, legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev led the team.
Meanwhile, early this year, when the right-arm pacer was promoted as the vice-captain, he had said that leading the team will be an honor. He also quipped that no player will say no to such an opportunity. The five-time Indian T20 League winner added that he doesn't chase anything in life and believes that God has a plan.
"If given an opportunity, it would be an honour. I don’t think any player would say no. There’s no bigger feeling than that," he had said back then.
"I don’t like to chase things because I don’t want to… See I am a person who believes that God has a plan and everything will find out its own way, so I don’t like to hamper the plan that is there. I try to never change anything," he said.
"Basically, you try to help all the people in whatever capacity you can. Even in Mumbai Indians, you have got a lot of senior players but now I am one of the senior players as well so you help the captain, you help everyone, you play the leadership role even when you are not asked to," he added.
