Bumrah returned with his best bowling figures in ODIs on Tuesday in the first match of the series. He picked up as many as 6 wickets for just 19 runs, including three maiden overs. With that performance, he also climbed to number one spot in the ICC ODI rankings for bowlers.

The Indian speedster surpassed the likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Trent Boult to take the number one position with 718 points. Bumrah recently made his first T20I appearance in India’s last 10 matches in the shortest format. He is currently ranked 28th in T20 internationals and sits at number three in Test rankings.

After exhibiting a match-winning spell in the first ODI against England, Jasprit Bumrah talked about his thought process behind consistent performances across format. Bumrah stated that he likes to stay in the present and focus on the process and not the results.

“I like to stay in the present. Nowadays, there are a lot of opinions and noise that can impact you and create confusion as a player. I try to focus on my evaluation and my preparations. I work on my processes and accept whatever the result is,” said Bumrah in the post-match conference.

“I don’t think on the lines of I am very good in this particular format or how good I am and so on. I enjoy every format. Obviously, I respect people’s opinion, but I don’t take it seriously, whether it is good or bad. Very grateful for the applause that I get, but I always try to keep a stable head.

Bumrah also believes the fact that he won’t receive same amount of success in every game and thus tries to be as stable as he can.

“That’s the beauty of cricket. One day, you feel everything is going in your favour. On another day, nothing you try works. That’s why it’s important to be stable. Every day is a new day. Sometimes you will get an edge with the first ball. Another day, you will bowl the whole day and not find the edge even once,” he added.

India will play against England in the second ODI on Thursday at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
