Since Virat Kohli decided to leave the Test captaincy, speculations have grown over who will be the new Test captain of the side. A new report suggested that BCCI has decided to name Rohit Sharma the new captain. However, there are few other reports that state that BCCI is also mulling over KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah as the next India captain.
If not the captain, one of the three players will certainly be handed the responsibility of the vice-captain. Bumrah has now reacted to the news and said he will not chase captaincy but if given an opportunity, he would like to explore it. "Captaincy is not something that I will chase - if given an opportunity, I would like to explore," Bumrah said in the press conference ahead of the ODI series against South Africa.
Rahul has been named the vice-captain of the limited-overs side and hence, is the obvious choice for Test deputyship. However, if BCCI follows the split captaincy strategy then they might look at some other guys in the team. Pant has the advantage as he did well while leading Delhi in the Indian T20 League.
Meanwhile, Bumrah has been named the vice-captain of the ODI side for the series against South Africa. Rahul would be captaining the Indian team in the absence of Rohit. Hence, Bumrah has been promoted to the position of vice-captain.
Bumrah further added the additional responsibility of being the vice-captain will not bring any change in his approach as he has always been available to help the players.
“I look at this situation in the same manner…taking responsibility and talking to players and helping them out has always been my approach and it will always be my approach going further keeping any situation in mind,” Bumrah said.
