The action returned in the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with an action-packed Sunday. Two matches were scheduled for the day in the weekend’s second doubleheader. The first match saw Punjab Kings beat the Chennai Super Kings by 4 wickets in a last-ball thriller. At the same time, the second game of the day had five-time winners Mumbai Indians host last year’s runners-up, Rajasthan Royals.
Talking of the day’s second game, the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. They started off blazingly as the opening partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Butler yielded them 72 runs. However, the Royals’ innings remained a one-man show as Jaiswal scored 124 off 62 balls, the highest individual score in this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League. Royals ended with 212/7 in 20 overs as only three other batters could surpass the double-figure mark.
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 16 boundaries and 8 maximums in his knock
Jaiswal’s maiden century in his IPL career came in 53 balls. With the century, he became the 4th youngest IPL centurion after Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant and Devdutt Padikkal. Notably, this was the 1000th IPL game in the lucrative league’s history. Coincidentally, Brendon McCullum kicked off the series of centuries in IPL’s history in the very first game. Jaiswal made sure to put his mark on the 1000th game with a brilliant century decorated with 16 fours and 8 sixes.
For the Mumbai Indians, Arshad Khan remained the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/39 in three overs. Piyush Chawla did a good job restricting the run flow giving away 34 runs in his four overs while picking up two wickets. Jofra Archer and Riley Meredith returned with one wicket apiece.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore will next play the Lucknow Super Giants in the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League at the Ekana Sports City Stadium. LSG comes into this match having dominated Punjab Kings by a 56-run win, while the RCB will be looking to bounce back after losing to KKR by 21 runs on their trip to Kolkata.
