A question mark looms over Justin Langer's future as Australia's head coach. The board is likely to decide on his future in the next few days. There have been speculations of a rift between the former opener and Cricket Australia, and the fact that Langer had to re-apply for his position apparently didn't sit well with him.
However, CA later clarified that Australia's current head coach was not asked to re-apply for the post. In the meanwhile, Pat Cummins chose not to comment anything about the future of Langer's position as head coach. Australia's Test captain left it to the board to evaluate the Western Australian's performance as a coach for four years.
It is to be noted that he was appointed as Australia's head coach in 2018. While speaking to 2 GB Radio, Cummins mentioned that Langer did a good job during his tenure. However, he did state that it was fair on CA's part to evaluate him.
I’ve got huge respect for Justin Langer: Pat Cummins
"It’s in Cricket Australia’s hands. Langer has been doing a fantastic job; he’s been there for four years; his contract is obviously up soon; they’re just going through an evaluation process at the moment, which I think is fair, the right thing to do," said Pat Cummins
"We all get evaluated all the time as cricketers. It’s part of a high-performance environment. That’s Cricket Australia’s job; it’s not my job. I’ve really loved my time working with JL," he added.
Cummins mentioned the fact that Langer's future isn't in his hands. He drew light on the protocols with respect to the evaluation process. However, the pacer did go on to say that he liked working with the 51-year-old. Recently under his tenure, the Aussies went on to win the ICC T20 WC 2021 and followed that by a 4-0 Ashes win down under.
"There’s been a process; I’ve been part of that; a lot of other players have been part of that. It’s just like when we get evaluated. I’ve got huge respect for JL; I’ve really liked working with him, but it’s not my call. Look, I really don’t want to speculate on it. I don’t think it’s really helpful," he said.
