On 29 May 2023, the final of the ongoing IPL took place at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Gujarat Titans (GT) took on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and speaking of the match, MS Dhoni won the toss. He asked GT to bat first and for them, Shubman Gill came to bat along with Wriddhiman Saha.

After the toss, Dhoni said: "We'll bowl first with the rain forecast being around. Yesterday we were in the dressing room. As a cricketer you always want to play. It was the crowd that suffered the most. Hopefully we can entertain them. Pitch has been under cover for a long time, but throughout the tournament the pitch has behaved well over here. Quite happy it will be a 20-over game we'll be playing. Serves justice to the tournament like this."

While Hardik Pandya said: "Would've bowled first as well, but my heart wanted to bat so I don't mind losing the toss. We spoke that it is something out of our control (weather). Whichever team plays better will have their hands on the trophy. I like keeping the boys cool, and they repay me. It's a flat track (what he makes of the pitch?)." Gill started the match with some blistering shots but he got dismissed on the sixth delivery of the seventh over, thanks to a quick stumping from MS Dhoni from behind the wicket.

He scored 39 runs off 20 balls, including seven fours and put up an opening partnership of 67 runs. Speaking about the dismissal, Ravindra Jadeja bowled the delivery and Gill missed that completely while going for a drive. Dhoni grabbed the ball and quickly dislodged the stumps to dismiss the GT opener. Gill failed to put his foot back into the crease in time. Seeing such a quick stumping, fans went crazy and shared their views on social media.
