Tilak Varma has called the right shots as he had a great T20I series on debut in the West Indies. The left-hander has scored 174 runs so far in his T20I career with his highest score of 51. Against Ireland, he could not replicate his form in the Caribbean and struggled there. The Andhra lad offered a left-handed option in the Indian T20I side.
Then, when the Asia Cup squad came out, Varma got a place in the side. Varma has shown potential in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he has scored 740 runs in 25 games. His rapid rise has been a cause of concern for Kris Srikkanth as he said that India have to groom him properly ahead of the 2023 World Cup.
Tilak Varma is promising -Ajit Agarkar
“Do not give Tilak Varma debut in a big tournament, play him in the ODI series before that," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel Cheeky Cheeka. “Tilak has fantastic potential, a brilliant player — but he has to play a couple of one-day series before putting him in the WC squad. We need to groom him properly," he added. When it comes to his List A record, the numbers speak for themselves.
Ajit Agarkar the newly appointed chairman of selectors in the Indian side had very positive words to say about Tilak in an interaction with the press. “Tilak Varma is promising. Asia Cup is a big opportunity for him. We saw some real promise not only in terms of performances but also temperament during the T20I series against West Indies. This will give him exposure. He is also a left-hander,"
The former India cricketer said that he is hoping KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will be able to play in the Asia Cup injury-free. “I hope both Iyer and Rahul stay fit and play well. I seriously hope that and my only worry is that if they break down in the middle of the tournament," he said.

Sad But Reality
It's not the time to groom anyone. If you want to groom him then prepare him for 2024 WC. We are literally 40 days away from WC and people want to groom youngers. At the cost of Asia cup & WC?

Tilak warma should be in odi wc squad. He's the player we need in no4/5. He can bat, bowl and superb fielder. He has to play more games for india before the wc so he can get adjust to international cricket. Huge talent in our hands
